Christy, by Catherine Marshall is a keeper and a reread. As soon as she arrives, the reader begins to see what this young woman is made of. Catherine Marshall is a consummate writer. His appeal for a volunteers to go to the Great Smoky Mountain region of Tennesee to help the impoverished people there does not go unheeded.

With voluminous long skirts and dainty shoes, she bravely trudges the seven miles through the snow to the mission. Her many adventures introduce her to the raw aspects of life on the frontier, and in the process she grows spiritually, learns from the simple folk she ministers to as the teacher in the one room school. Sheldon, author of OMNIPIECE This is a can't-put-down book which definitely helped me in my Christian journey. The story takes place in the early 1900s, featuring a 19 year old pampered city girl whose heart is deeply stirred by a visiting missionary. Much to her parents' consternation, Christy answers the call.
A real page-turner; however, due to some mature subject matter, I wouldn't recommend this book for young girls. This is a wonderful book about a woman's journey of faith, which leads her to a deeper relationship with God, a higher level of maturity, and true love.
The book is hard to put down and holds the reader until the very end. However an older woman, a missionary, teaches her that God gives people choices and opportunities and hardships to allow us to demonstrate the quality of our character and our commitment to give to others. Christy is a young teacher who goes into the Appalachian Mountains to teach. The harsh living conditions, abuse, poverty, and death and dying make her question God.
And, it's well written on top of it. I'm spellbound. I am halfway through this book, and like most of the books that I love, I want to know more, lots more, about this remarkable woman. Nary a typo, so far. Highly recommend. The dialogue is very interesting and it's a rare glimpse into a culture that I know about, but don't truly know. Fascinating story.
Christy was the first big novel I had my daughter read when she was about twelve.Catherine Marshall is a well known Christian author who only wrote two fiction books (Christy and I believe the other one was called Julia). She would never include anything like that in a book. This is one of my all time favorite books. I was surprised by another reviewer giving this book one star for a rape scene. The rest were about living the Christian life. I especially like this edition since it contains a lot of information about the "real" Christy (Marshall's mother) and insight into how it was written. I've read it many times and do not recall anything like that. I was very careful about the reading material I gave my kids, even as they were teens.
